Discretion—Recognizing and avoiding words, actions and attitudes that could result in undesirable consequences.
For some discretion is perceived as a weakness – being passive under pressure, avoidance of giving a straight answer, lack of action, or even avoiding conflict altogether. Yet, consider the position of power in which a person of discretion stands when they:
Listen
Stop to ask clarifying questions
Recognize and compliment the contributions of others
Display manners, respect, courtesy, and honor to others
Demonstrate a teachable nature; a willingness to learn something new, to be taught by someone else, and value the lesson being taught.
Keep the view of a bigger picture in mind, rather than being swayed by the allure of immediate gratification or results.
Discretion is not avoidance of something uncomfortable or difficult, but the boldness to face the situation and respond in a way that maintains the respect for and integrity of those we serve now and in the future.
Proverbs 3:21-26 says, “My son, do not lose sight of these – keep wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked when it comes, for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.”
Security. Peace. Humility and Confidence.
I dare say not many would desire to be without any of these in our families, our places of business and our community. The key, then, to having those present, would be to model and reflect discretion in the now and for our future.
